After earning his degree in sociology from UNC Charlotte, Daniel Freeman Ed.D entered the collegiate athletics industry to explore his passion for sports, coaching, marketing, and external relationships. His journey continued with an MS in Exercise Science/Sport Management and a Doctorate in Education/Global Sport Leadership, two more stops in athletics fundraising, and then transitioned into the realm of academic fundraising for his 3 most recent roles. He is currently the Chief Development Officer at Gaston College overseeing all development, alumni, and fundraising operations for 6,000 students and 14,000 continuing-education learners.
Due to the multiple roles Dr. Freeman has held; he considers himself a fundraising generalist with multiple specialties. He has worked alongside and collaborated with academic medicine while at Drexel University & Gaston College and been a part of University Fundraising for the past decade at large public & private institutions (Drexel, UNC Charlotte, George Mason), small liberals arts (UNC Asheville), and community college/workforce development while at Gaston College. While working in small athletics fundraising shops and within decentralized fundraising units, he assisted in and led fundraising operations, systems, and support. He helped plan and begin campaigns at UNC Asheville and George Mason and finished campaigns at UNC Charlotte and Drexel. Through his roles and more so as he has progressed, he has helped develop/champion team dynamics, developed boards, and worked with many Deans and those in the executive leadership, which he now resides.
Dr. Freeman finds fulfillment and joy as an adjunct professor in the field of nonprofit and sport management, he volunteers with AFP – Greater Charlotte in their United Way Pilot Program, and is the founder of Next Generation Fundraising Network.
